450 BED HOSPITAL IN JEDDAH - Saudia Arabia
At the end of 1994 we were asked to prepare a hospital design for
a land located in Al Jamaa District of Jeddah. The site was on the
main road to Makkah, with a total area of 10,000 m2.
The building covers the whole site in the first
two floors, but the ground floor walls are set 3,5 meter inside
the external columns, leaving a covered pedestrian way all around.
Our design can be described as two storey lower base block, surrounded
by an arcade all around the site and four inpatient blocks continuing
over it. There are three walk in entrances of the hospital and
they are, the main entrance on the Makkah Road, emergency entrance
from the right and outpatient entrance from the left sides. The
program of the lower block includes entance halls, shopping areas,
cafeteria, administration, admitting, conference hall, outpatient
facilities, pharmacy, diagnostic and emergency departments. The
third floor of the back side which is over the emergency, and
daignostic activities, has been designed as the surgical department
with the intensive care units at the other side of the atrium.
The building has three basement floors for services, techical
rooms and closed parking purposes.
Inpatient units is as an H shape block
with an atrium at the middle and day light can permeate from both
sides of the building and enrich the atrium area which encloses
visitor cafeteria at the mezannine floor. There are four groups
of inpatient rooms, each with three elevators and two stairs and
all the departments are connected to each other by bridges flying
in the atrium. The inpatient blocks are 7 storey and set back
an axis from the lower blocks. Staff restaurant and recreation
facilities are designed on the roof floor, leaving a terrace all
around the building. Four service cores are continuing over the
roof, with mechanical rooms at the top and an heliport at the
middle.
